Today is your intro, which means I'm going to explain in depth something fairly simple.

Not really.

What I'm going to do is begin the series that I have called "Skyways to Steampunk"

These are the ambitions that I have for this spring break. I'll be drawing up the designs for my new wardrobe and posting pictures and links of other peoples designs similar to mine. Or rather the wardrobe that I wish I had.

So here's the schedule.

At around 8 or 9pm I'll be posting the first part of the series with Underwear. Really, just a bunch of petticoats and shifts. It seems like a good place to start.

Then tomorrow at around the same time it'll be skirts; one of my favorite things to design in steampunk.

Next will be Blouses, simple in theory but complicated in execution.

Then Vests and Corsets. The staple for the Steampunk wardrobe. A good couple of vests and a fantastic corset will make the wardrobe.

The most exciting feature will be Dresses. Not many of these are needed for the wardrobe. For the most part, dresses in steam-punk can look a bit too costume-ish. Let's see if we can't change that, yes?

The last day will be Accessories and Jewelry, which are the little details that make all the difference. These will make sure you look like a Steam-punk and not like an idiot.

Soooo... let's see how this goes.

Why am I who I am?

I have always been a bit of an action hero. I don't really know why, I just do these little... things.

Me and my parents were talking about this last night.

When I was eight years old my dad took me Carribu hunting. This isn't so out there. I'm an Alaska girl so this is how things work. My dad was looking around and saw these carribu, he brought up his gun and I ducked and covered. Big boom, small ears, good reflexes. It all adds up.

When I hear a gun shot, I get down and then look to see where the people who are with me are.

My church rocks by the way. There's a group of young men who like to play with low powered explosives. And who doesn't? So they decided to make a small powered bomb.
Me and my friends were outside at the time, and they did take the proper precautions so that no small children were harmed by shrapnel. They were far enough away that we couldn't find them and we wouldn't get hurt, but we could hear them.

"BOOM!" The exposion hit me lightly in the chest (lighter than other explosions have, anyway) and I leapt off the swings. This is what passed in the matter of 2 seconds.

Mark looked at me and then began to shout commands at some of the older kids. My I was crouching like a tiger, thoughts passing rapid fire through my head. "Where are the little kids? Curtis, Clayton, they are... over there, Beckah and Seth are... over there, and Mark is... there, he's fine"

Then we heard it, the sound of manic laughter coming over the hill. It was Jesse. Never mind.

So I've always been a bit of an action hero in my own right.

Just, no one wants me.

A New Title, A New Adventure

This blog has been a knitting blog, and knitting will always be a part of it. But now we have a new adventure to embark on.

Film.

I want to be involved in this industry. I want to be the person who makes other people happy with the images on the screen. I want... I want...

I am...

I am...

That person on the street who you pas by without a second glance.

The girl that only a few boys have wanted.

The kid who people saw potential in to be a better person. One of the redeemed. Daughter. Sister. Friend. Writer. Artist. Actress.

So now what? Do I armor myself to slay a dragon once again? But to slay a dragon in armor is to be asked to be roasted.Do I scream? Do I cry out? Do I cling to what I once was?

No.

I pray. I wait. Oi vhey, it is so heartbreaking. But it;s best to maintain your sanity by using this philosophy; if you have to tear out hours of knitting that you think looked bad, you are fixing a mistake in something that you invested in. Yes there's the whole time thing, but the time that you invest into this garment is going to be repaid ten-fold if you like the way it looks on you.

That's how it happened with my sweater dress, I used the regular increases and this made a weird box panel in the front and a tail in the back. Sorry, no pictures. I decided this wasn't a problem and fell back on plan "B" which was raglan increases, these I started halfway down the thigh. Oh boy. I finally used up the final of the 12 balls of yarn (that's 1320 yards) and tried it on. I went to the bathroom, looked in the mirror, and went numb. I looked ridiculous, the skirt flared out properly, but it was from the thigh. The torso was too long, and the sections of reverse stock-knit looked like a Jane Jetson dress. That would be okay, if I wasn't going for old world drama with this thing.

I went down stairs and showed my parents, me and my mom talked about it and now I know what I have to do. I took off one of the sections of reverse stock-knit and am starting a raglan type increase from there. I am also lengthening the skirt down below my knees to give it the right line and lengthening the sleeves so they don't drive me crazy.

Okay, this is okay. I am making myself something that will become a good friend and that I will wear for years to come. Two weeks of knitting will seem like nothing. It's probably time to knit on my little sisters hood.

Education

I need to gather more information, my knitting knowledge is supremely stunted. This has become apparent after my decision to write a knitting book. The only question is, how does one educate them self enough to write such a book. I know that this will never happen if it isn't completed with in the next 15 months. I know that seems like a long time, but my short attention span is lengthened when it comes to my craft.
So, now I have about 6 months to make all the projects needed to educate me for this book. I cannot tell what my book is about, but it will fill a void in the knitting world and satisfy many knitting cravings. It will be a rule breaker, and a till turner. You will not be disapointed.

Am I Insane (wait don't answer!)

The bad thing about sweater knitting is that you tend to get carried away. Espesially with a mind like mine. I wouldn't say that I have a dramatic mind, but I have a mind that wanders toward drama. If you were to ask me what my favorite movie is, it's LOTR (hey, my icon is Nenya, Galadriels ring!). Favorite scene in the trilogy... toss up between Theodins exorsism recovery scene (beutiful graphics!) or Haldirs death scene (I realise that Legolas was the only elf at Helms Deep, but that is a beutiful way to do a death scene.) That is how dramatic my mind is, I am the ulimate conisure of death scenes. Playing in the woods with my guy friends, we do death scenes most of the time (go Rory!).

Anyway, imagine my excitement when God gives me the idea to knit a dress. (I belive that the ideas that are carried out with the best enthusiasm are from Yahweh.) I had to do it! Am I insane?

My idea with this is an alternate pullover. You know that stupid, shlumpy pullover that you wear and it has no shape and you are only wearing it beacuse it's cold and you need some comfort. But what about a pullover that you cna throw on and still feel stunning? That's what I want.

So now we come to the whole length thing. Where is this thing going to hit me, thighs, knees? Well I didn't really have a prefrence, until I saw Eragon.

Me and my sister have been listening to the books from the library, she loves the books I think that they are rediculous, but listen along so I can laugh at Paolini. The movie is even more ridiculous. They blew through it like it was nothing, too fast paced (but I watch things like LOTR and POTC, so anything is fast and rapid compared). But one of the panning airials caught my breath, it was when Brom died and Saphirah made him a diamond tomb. The airial of Saphirah, Eragon, and Arya was a good shot, but the length of Aryas dress made me want that dress. So I really hope this thing is going to hit me at the knees.

Now my plan is to make a cloak, yes a cloak. With complicated cables to keep me busy and happy. I just ordered enough yarn to make me feel satisfied with the ammount of yardage. Okay, on Knit Picks, that's $70 worth, on the yarn!!! Imagine if I had wanted to knit this thing in Alpaca! okay, not contemplating.

Anyway, I think that we have stablished that I am binkers, so here I go with my drama knitting.

Misconceptions

Again, I am not writing about knitting. But I will post about what I'm making later. Now, I have a score to settle.
Alaska, my home state, not homeland, I don't pretend or want to think that I'm a part of this plastic food crunching country that my state happens to be a member of. I'm from Scotland, that's my mother land, but my homeland; Alaska.
Why do you McDonalds munching dorks think that we speak Eskimo? Why do you think that all those able to hold them own guns? Where did you get the idea that we have pet penguins, cartoons and mouldy movies? YOU MORONS!
This week I get to write a paper on the misconceptions of my state. That’s why I’m on my soapbox once again. We are part of you Union, we are not ice and snow, I don’t ride the polar bear to school, and I most certainly don’t LIVE IN AN IGLOO, D’ARV’IT! As you can see I feel quite strongly about this. More examples before explanations.
My family went to Hawai’i a few weeks ago, that place is my second home; but we always meet someone who, upon looking at my parents I.D. after a debit transaction says in surprise, “Wow! Alaska!” well what were you expecting? ESKIMOS? I personally have nothing against Eskimos or the “Native population of Alaska.” (for you bloody politically correct morons), I personally think that it was quite vile the way we moved in here. Calling the land and it’s recourse's our own because of a few slips of paper. But I’m a second gen Alaskan, so I am the land.
Anyway, I will be addressing 5 issues in this paper. Start groaning all tourons, ‘cause a local is gonna pry you off this land with the biggest bloody crowbar you ever saw!
Issue #1- The Weather. The thing about Alaska’s weather is, it’s allot like Washington state (yes I’ve been there.). We have rain, but in the winter (notice WINTER) we have more snow. Sunshine is prominent in the summer. If you want all the sun and not the vast quantities of heat for your vacation, it’s AK for you my friend!
Issue #2-Everyone owns a gun. This is not true, though I myself have a gun, it is not registered under me due to the law that all those who want to own firearms must be the age of 21. This law helps keep down the teenage gang populous from hurting each other and us. I know of plenty of people who don’t own a gun, I just can’t think of any right now...
Issue #3- We live in igloos. Okay, that misconception goes hand in hand with the weather statement above. Note the words, Summer, Sun, and Rain. These words are key in the understanding of the fact that, you can’t live in a non-existent igloo.
Issue #4- The Language. Okay notice the language in which you are reading this. English, right? (Sorry all non English readers but I’m doing this to make a point.) Oh! Look! The letters on my keyboard are decidedly ENGLISH runes. Oh! Look! English phrases and terms. The idea t hat we speak “Eskimo” is ridiculous.
Issue #5-The polar bear thing. Oh good grief, don’t get me started. I am dying for the day when some dork from the lower 48 who decided to ask me if I live in an igloo and have a pet penguin to say, “Why, yes. And I ride the polar bear to school and conduct all my lessons in Eskimo and Russian.” I live for the day. Anyway, you will have to have an understanding of the words “polar bear” before you can understand my answer. Notice the first word; Polar. I live in south-central dang-it, NOT BARROW! Barrow had occasional polar bears (note OCCASIONAL). But I am 500 miles south of that region. So no, I don’t have a pet penguin or ride the polar bear to school, nor do I speak “Eskimo” or Russian. Another thing is, how can I have a pet penguin and ride the polar bear. Polar bears live in the arctic circle and penguins in Antarctica, on opposite sides of the planet. Hmmm....

Anyway, the point of all my ranting is, I live a beautiful place that needs some respect dang-it. But someone on the chat boards of city-data.com once said that we in fact are the root of the problem in these misconception, saying that we can freeze fire and own polar bears. We shouldn’t do it, we should stop, but it is fun!

Into the Fire

Like millions of people worldwide, I just watched Anthony Bourdain, No Reservations; Into the Fire. The beginning of the show, like many others, infuriated me.
"Like Bobby Flay":, let me tell you something about the Iron Chef, the multi-restaurant owner, the food network star sense before I was born. He is not a warrior; he is a skirmisher. He makes the recipes and maintains order and number in his 3 restaurants. He once worked the line, but had been reduced to the status of a T.V. personality. Now he works in a kitchen for an hour every two months for Iron Chef, at the max. He is the one most challenged on Iron Chef. Has anyone else noticed how he gets his butt whopped every single time?
The kitchen, the line, the station is battle field. Kitchen Stadium is a taekwondo matt, a couple of hardworking rounds and your done. A mere hour to get 5 dishes finished and plated.
The kitchen, a real kitchen in a 3 star restaurant, is a battle field. Hour after hour, dish after dish, no rest until you complete all the dishes and the patrons go home full. The enemy? The patrons them selves, some of them are just itching for you to trip up and come up with an underdone steak. You will PROVE THEM WRONG, and send them home satisfied. The stove is your horse; the whisk and bowl, your bow and arrow; the knife, your sword; the board, your shield. Once you lead the charge into the dinner rush, there is no going back. Take that Flay, you try it again. Throwdown, 4 hours in a hectic kitchen, with hundreds of orders to fill? Try it, just try it...

Why so surprising?

When I knit in public, I get odd looks, double takes, and people exclaiming that they didn't know you could knit with three needles. Why are they so surprised? What is so extraordinary about a girl my age knitting on DPN's?
The comments and looks I get are funny but never hurtful. No one has ever said to me; "Isn't that the sort of thing that old ladies do?" No one has ever called me granny, no one has scoffed at my lifestyle.
One such comment was particularly funny. Sitting in a lodge at a camp weekend retreat, a middle school boy across from me exclaimed "Woah! I didn't know you could knit like that!" he was fascinated with my craft. Maybe I should steal Kelley Petkun's idea and make a sign that says "Free Knitting Lessons".
But the boy watched in fascination none the less. He had apparently seen my shirt earlier. I was wearing my Metal Head Knitter t-shirt. He said, "Unzip your sweater and show them your shirt! It's so cool!" I showed them the shirt, it has a Metal Head skull and crossed needles.
The point of my rant is, why are people so surprised? Our craft is thousands of years old, people used to do it just to survive. So, in the 21'st century, with our mass produced socks, scarves, and sweaters, knitting is for the elite, the few and far between who have the courage to shake our needles at the factories and cheap sock producing sweat-houses of the world. The question is, are you ready to knit in public and take on the fight? What is our fight? We are fighting the images that knitting is done by little old ladies in rocking chairs with a shawl over her shoulders. Not that there is anything wrong with that, but there is more than one image of a knitter. Including a teenaged girl in an airline seat with her iPod.

Sweater Knitting.

I have just started on my first sweater. I work on it every day and I have to say, I'm addicted. The fact that I don't have to carry a pair of scisors in my bag as i'm working on it beacause the fact that I will finnish it in the 2-6 hours that I'm out of the house is so small that I don't bother. I'm so happy with the sweater that I am knitting. It's the Textured Tunic with Side Buttons out of Fitted Knits by Stefanie Japel on page 102. It's beutiful. The box stitch in the middle is done in a handdyed yarn in greens. The body is a forest green heather. I have gotten so many compliments that I can't wait to finnish and wear it.

I have started to plan and save up for my next sweater. This one is for my little sister out of the same book. It's the Back to School u neck vest on page 82 with a couple of varriations. There is going to be a steek up the front beacause she wants a cardigan. I'm also going to pick up the stiches at the neckline and make a hood.

I have also developed my own opinion about where I am going to buy yarn from now on. I got the yarn for this one at Ewe First Yarn Co. in Wasilla. It was fantastic in there, there were so many yarns that I wanted to scoop them all up. But I can't, I'm on a tight budget. $15 every other week budget. Ouch, so you see why I haven't started yet? Well, I had a little saved up and my dad was kind enough to pay for the rest. Even with a $12 credit, it cost me $40! AHHHHH! So now I know where to go. Knit Picks. The shipping is expensive, but it's worth it for a sweater project. It would have cost me $16 to make the exact sweater in the excact gauge with a different heather. So my little sisters sweater is going to be in shine worsted in the color reef. That is costing me $18, not bad. It's cotton so she can wash it and I won't cry when it gets thrown in the wash. She will love it.

The Essentials Part 1

So I am going to fill you in on why these things are so important to me. The first thing is scissors. That is a little obvious why I need these. When you cast off, how are you going to sever the yarn, with you teeth? While you could do this, I wouldn't reccomend it, wool doesn't taste that good (tee hee!)
Next is a crochet hook, this isn't so obvious to alot of people. The fact is, dropped stitches are hard to pick up with out these things. Sure, I can use a knitting needle to pick it up, but that is really hard.
Next on my list is stitch markers, these are familliar to any knitter who loves socks, hats, gloves or other things knit in the round.
Next is a tape measure, you will need this for accurate measurements like those for a form fitting sweaters. How are you going to measure the circumfrence of your head for a hat, or your bust for a proper fitting sweater? The answer is simple my friends, splurge that $1 and get a moltent tape measure.
Well that's all I'm going to post today on this subject, but there will be more.

The Essentials

I have been thinking about this allot lately. Many knitters have a problem knitting christmas gifts beacuse of the hard pressed deadline. I, however, don't. I like the fact that I have a motive and a time when it has to be done. This year, every one in my youth group is getting a hand knit christmas gift. That isn't saying much beacuse our youth group is really small. The knitting is gratifying beacause it's going to people I love.

This year I am mostly giving away gloves, as I have said before, gloves are like my socks. I love knitting these things and I feel gratified to make them for my friends.

I don't have anything else to say today, so I will leave you now to think on this, I learned that God can change the most wicked.

Knitting Socks, a Rant, and a Book Review

Okay, so; I just got my first sock knitting book. It's called "Getting Started Knitting Socks" by Ann Budd. This book is fantastic! I really shouldn't have done it, but I started to knit a pair of socks. I really should have been working on Christmas presents, but I couldn't resist the temptation! The designs for the socks in this book, she has socks in lots of colors and gauges. Some of the colors aren't my personal taste, but hey, I'm a metal head. But the best thing about the book is, it has sock patterns, but it will teach you how to design your own socks. This is good for me because I like to design clothes, so this is important to me. One thing that made me go to my knitting grandmother and my aunt was the heel flap. I didn't get it until my aunt said. "You purl that row, don't do the same thing as you did the first row." I felt pretty blond at that moment. (I'm not blond, I'm a redhead)
The colors that appeal to me are Black, Red, Green, Brown, and Grey; so the only socks that appeal to me are the demos, and the cranberry red socks. But the good thing about socks is that you have a blank canvas to throw your preference in there.
Now, here's my rant. Because my ideal sock needles are full, I decided to try the Magic Loop method. Now, that means all your stitches are on one long circular, instead of two crics or three double points. I have to say, I hated it. I defend any ones right to knit this method as much as they want, but I can't stand it! The cable flopped around and I got frustrated with the method. I am a die hard DPN knitter, so this method was confusing. I got to the gusset pickup and decided enough was enough, I yanked out the needle. I felt relived and picked up my Christmas knitting.
I haven't knitted socks yet because of the daunting prospects of the dreaded heel turn. But, even on a new method of knitting that I wasn't used to, it was easy! Imagine what it will be like on my DPN's !!!! After the holidays are over, I will begin my first pair of socks.
Now, what do I knit on replacement for socks? Many knitters use socks as a travel knitting or social knitting. I have my own variation; immediately after I learned how to use DPN's, I made up a fingerless glove pattern. This is my fallback for fast gifts, and travel knitting. It takes me maximum 5 days to knit a pair of gloves. However, once I learn how to make socks, this will be my fall back.
Thank you Mrs. Budd for this book and I give it an A+!!

This is me.

Hey! I am the original Metal Head Knitter. I live in Alaska and I love to knit. Unlike most knitting bloggers out there, I am an intermediate knitter. I have only been knitting things other than My Little Pony items for my little sister for a year now. I just learned to cable and I am knitting my first pair of socks. I am not the most talented knitter out there, so my blog might be a bit boring. But I will try to find new knitting related topics to post and review.
My dad calls me the metal head knitter because of my tendency to pull out a pair of gloves and my iPod during, say a Taekwondo tournament and rock out to Switchfoot and Skillet. Yes I listen to Skillet and I am a Christian.
Anyway, I am fairly young, I will not reveal my age due to security reasons. This may be a problem for some of you out there, but hey I am a one of a kind knitter that may have some interesting opinions. One thing that will be a problem is the fact that I will not be publishing any photos of my family, friends or myself for that matter. Later on I will rant about my security prefs.
I know that I have been somewhat stunted in my knitting growth, so you will see me grow as a knitter and as a girl.
Now I can actually tell you why the heck I’m doing this. I want to make it known that teens are knitting and it is important to allot of us. Here’s a list why I think that teens should and why we knit.
1.It keeps us off the streets and gives us an addiction other than drugs.
2. It gives us a better social life.
3.It opens up gift giving ideas.
4.It makes us feel very romantic, even those who don’t have a romantic mind (like me).
5.A lot of the stars are doing it.
Now the last one isn’t really a good reason in my opinion (hey, I was knitting before anyone really thought it was cool), but it is a reason why teens are knitting. That’s not the problem, the problem is, the media refuses to acknowledge that it is a boom among teens.
I love Knit Picks and their podcast, I , in fact, subscribe to it. But Mrs. Petkun never talks about teen knitters. I even put a comment on the website and it hasn’t been acknowledged to my knowledge. They talk about “young knitters” or kids who knit, but that comment is a major variable in my opinion. There aren’t many books out there that appeal to teen knitters and the ones that do are fantastic! Please, we want more! Books for teens with not allot of knitting time or short attention spans are great!
Anyway, that’s one of my rants. There’ll be more, trust me. I’ll also be reviewing books, podcasts, blogs, and brand new music from the artists I love. I’ll have a thing at the top of my blog that will be called “Now Playing”. This will be the music I’ve been listening to lately.
Thanks!
Strider
